You heard it here first, Thailand is to re-open by October 14th 2021! Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha has announced that within 120 days from today, Thailand will fully re-open for foreign visitors.

Like most countries around the world, Thailand is focusing its efforts on an exit strategy from the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM believes that it is necessary for the welfare of the people to restart an economy that is heavily dependent on tourism.

The PM acknowledges that no opening of borders comes without risk, “I know this decision comes with some risk because, when we open the country, there will be an increase in infections, no matter how good our precautions”.

This move by the PM is a testament to the ongoing success of the global vaccine rollout. Thailand is expecting to vaccinate 10 million people each month from July, resulting in 50 million people receiving a first dose of the vaccine by October.

It’s extremely exciting news and something that will give anyone planning a trip to Thailand in the next 6-12 months plenty of hope. Soon we’ll all be back to sipping cocktails at the beach on Koh Phi Phi.

Easing of restrictions from 1st July

It has been confirmed by the Thai government that travel restrictions will be eased for arrivals directly into the island of Phuket. If you already read our previous blog about ‘Thailand travel in 2021’ you will have noticed we mentioned the program known as the ‘Sandbox’. This scheme will act as a pilot test for a full re-opening of Thailand by October.

The Sandbox scheme will allow fully vaccinated travellers from low-risk countries the freedom to travel to Thailand without the need to vaccinate. Visitors will be able to travel within the island of Phuket for a period of 14 days, with further easing of restrictions thereafter. This easing will allow travellers after 14 days to travel the rest of mainland Thailand while adhering to regional rules and regulations.

For the Sandbox plan to be given the green light the Thai government have set a target of vaccinating 70% of the Phuket population. At this current moment, the vaccination rate is at 60%. If the target is hit the Thailand COVID-19 task force will allow for the Sandbox to go ahead as planned.

Requirements to travel Thailand from October…

The exact details have yet to be confirmed as everything is reliant on the Sandbox program being a success. We are expecting that foreign tourists will be required to have been fully vaccinated at least 2 weeks prior to travel.

It is highly likely that the Thai government will request proof of vaccination. We would expect this to be in some form of digital version. Final details will be drawn out as we get closer to October.
