When is the best time/month to travel to New Zealand?
New Zealand’s rugged beauty and diverse landscapes make it a must-visit year-round! Summer (December to March) brings long, sunny days that are perfect for outdoor adventures, from hiking to lounging by crystal-clear lakes. Winter (June to September) blankets the South Island and parts of the North in snow, creating a paradise for skiers and glacier explorers. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn offer milder weather, breathtaking colours, and fewer crowds, making them an ideal time for a quieter, yet equally stunning, experience. Whenever you go, an adventure in New Zealand won’t disappoint!
How many days in New Zealand is enough?
We recommend setting aside 2-3 weeks for your trip to New Zealand to truly experience the wonders of this incredible country. With so much to explore—from geothermal marvels in the North Island to dramatic glaciers and fiords in the South Island—you’ll want plenty of time to soak it all in. Planning your own itinerary can be a challenge, but our New Zealand tours are designed to take care of all the logistics, letting you focus on the adventure. We handle the boring stuff so you can enjoy every breathtaking moment 🙌🏼
Do I need a visa to travel to New Zealand?
For most travelers, New Zealand is an accessible destination with a straightforward electronic travel authorization process. Citizens from visa waiver countries, including the UK, US, and many European nations, can visit New Zealand for up to three months without a visa. British citizens may stay for up to six months. However, all travelers from these countries must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before arrival.
The NZeTA can be requested online or via a mobile app and is typically processed within 72 hours. It’s valid for up to two years and allows multiple entries. When applying, you’ll also need to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).
*It’s important you check your own visa eligibility as we are not visa experts and the information above is general in nature. We’ve put together a blog covering all the above points and more ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia, Australia & New Zealand’.
What injections/vaccinations do I need for New Zealand?
Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination/immunisation history on file. All the destinations and areas we travel to are generally low-risk, but best to be on the safe side! Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website.
What kind of people join these group tours?
It doesn't matter whether you're travelling solo, with a friend, or adventuring as a couple. Our trips attract a variety of different people from all corners of the world with a common goal of having the BEST time with like-minded people. Our trips are super popular for people looking to explore new places but don't want the worry of doing it alone or don't have the time to plan a trip themselves. Jumping on a group tour in New Zealand is a super popular, convenient and hassle-free way to travel!
Are group tours in New Zealand worth it? Why would I not just travel solo?
Planning a solo trip to New Zealand can be time-consuming and overwhelming, with so much to see and do across both islands. That’s where our group tours come in! Designed to take the stress out of planning, we handle all the details for you—from comfortable accommodations and transportation to exciting activities and must-see destinations. With everything expertly organised, you’ll have the freedom to enjoy New Zealand’s incredible landscapes and adventures while travelling with like-minded people. Forget the hassle and focus on making memories!
I am looking to come alone, do many people travel solo?
Yes, absolutely! In fact, most people on our trips are solo travellers, with just a few joining as friends or couples. Our tours are designed with solo adventurers in mind, making it easy to connect and make lifelong friends from the moment you arrive. You’ll enjoy the confidence and security of travelling as part of a group while still having the freedom to experience New Zealand in your own way. It’s the perfect mix of solo travel and shared adventure!
How much spending money do I need?
Once you’ve booked your flights, paid for your trip, and sorted out travel insurance, you’re ready for your New Zealand North Island adventure! With all your accommodation, transport, and a few meals included, your spending money will depend on your personal preferences—whether you want to dine out often, enjoy a few drinks, or dive into some of the incredible optional experiences on offer.
New Zealand is world-renowned for its epic adventure activities and unique experiences, so it would be a shame to arrive on a tight budget and potentially miss out on bucket-list activities like bungy jumping, skydiving, or jet boating. We suggest budgeting a minimum of NZ$400–$600 (£200–£300) per week for meals that aren’t included and general daily expenses. Extra money for optional activities will depend on how many of these once-in-a-lifetime adventures you’d like to include in your trip.
What should I book first, the flights or the tour?
Great question! We always recommend booking your tour first before locking in your flights. Our trips have limited spaces and can fill up quickly, so securing your spot ensures you won’t miss out. Flights tend to have more availability, giving you flexibility to plan once your tour is confirmed. After booking your trip, sort your flights and then purchase travel insurance to cover all eventualities. Getting these three essentials sorted early will set you up for a stress-free adventure!
How far in advance do you recommend booking my trip to New Zealand?
Most travellers book their New Zealand adventure 3-4 months in advance, which allows for more flexibility when choosing dates. However, spaces on our trips are limited and can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. If you have your heart set on specific dates, we recommend securing your spot as soon as possible by placing a deposit. For last-minute bookings, be prepared for limited availability—so the earlier, the better!
I’ve been looking at a few companies, what makes Feel Free Travel different?
If you're asking this question, you've probably not read what our incredible travellers are saying in the reviews. You would have noticed already that we are insanely passionate about sharing life-changing experiences with our groups. When we travel, it's more like a group of mates with that one friend who thankfully knows where they're going. Our group sizes are small and intimate, averaging 12-16 travellers. If you've not already, click here to join the 'Feel Free Family - Facebook Group'.
Is it possible to book a private tour of New Zealand with a group of friends?
We specialise in bringing solo travellers together who arrive as complete strangers and soon become best friends/extended travel family. With that being said, we have been known to offer private tours subject to availability. If you send us an email to [email protected] one of the team will be in touch and see what we can do… no promises!
