Japan is firmly at the top of every backpacker and solo traveller’s wish list, and it’s easy to see why. Known as the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan serves up a wild mix of ancient temples and futuristic cities. One minute you’re getting lost in the lights of Tokyo, the next you’re chilling with Mt. Fuji in the background or temple-hopping in Kyoto. Add in mouthwatering food, bullet trains that run like clockwork, and locals who are seriously lovely, and you've got the trip of a lifetime. From buzzing cities to the peaceful countryside, Japan is the kind of place that hits different in all the best ways.

Share The Adventure
Experience the magic of Japan on one of our epic backpacking group tours. Race your new mates in a Tokyo arcade or chill with a sake in a hidden Golden Gai bar; snap a pic of Mt. Fuji in the countryside or ride the bullet train through the mountains to Takayama; get hands-on in a sushi-making class in Osaka or wander the lantern-lit alleyways of Kyoto. From bowing deer in Nara to geisha-spotting in Gion, our incredible team has designed our group trips in Japan to find the perfect balance of culture, adventure, chill time and nightlife.
Japan is a year-round destination, with each season offering something totally unique. Spring (March to May) brings cherry blossoms and mild weather, while autumn (September to November) is famous for stunning red and gold leaves. Summer can get hot and humid, but it’s full of energy, and winter (December to February) brings crisp days and peaceful, snow-dusted temples. Our group trips are designed to be the perfect length, giving you enough time to experience the best of Japan with a bunch of like-minded travellers while still giving you space either side of the trip to explore solo, soak up the culture or follow your own adventure.
How many days in Japan is enough?
We recommend 10 to 14 days if you’re joining a group trip. It’s the perfect amount of time to experience the best of Japan without feeling rushed, with all the planning, transport and logistics taken care of. If you’re thinking of travelling solo, you might want to give yourself up to 3 weeks. It can take a little longer to figure things out on your own, from navigating train networks to deciding where to go and how to get there. Our 10-day group trip keeps it simple, stress-free and packed with unforgettable experiences from start to finish 🙌🏼
Do I need a visa to travel to Japan?
For most travellers, Japan is pretty straightforward when it comes to entry. Many nationalities can enter visa-free for short-term stays, usually up to 90 days. However, rules can vary depending on your passport, so it’s important to double-check the latest entry requirements before you travel. It’s your responsibility to make sure everything is in order so your arrival into Japan is smooth and stress-free.
*It’s important you check your own visa eligibility as we are not visa experts and the information above is general in nature. We’ve put together a blog covering all the above points and more ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.
What injections/vaccinations do I need for Japan?
Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date official guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination and immunisation history on file. All destinations and areas we travel to are generally low risk but best to be on the safe side. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website.
What kind of people join these group tours?
It doesn't matter whether you're travelling solo, with a friend, or adventuring as a couple. Our trips are full of different people from all corners of the world with a common goal to have the BEST time with like-minded people. Our trips are super popular for people looking to explore a new place but don't want the worry of doing it alone or don't have the time to plan it themselves. Jumping on a group tour in Japan is a super convenient and hassle-free way to travel!
Are group tours in Japan worth it? Why would I not just travel solo?
Travelling alone is a big commitment and often requires a significant amount of planning both before you set off and when you arrive. It can be nerve-racking and often very overwhelming. Joining a group trip can remove all those worries and leave you completely worry-free with everything planned for you from the moment the trip begins. Our Japan group tours include comfortable multi-share accommodation, transport between locations, local activities and experiences, and a bunch of meals to get you started.
I am looking to come alone, do many people travel solo?
Yes, absolutely! Most people actually come alone, with there often being a few people travelling together either as friends or as a couple. Our trips are perfect for solo travellers as you'll make friends from the moment you arrive, and you'll have the confidence and security of doing it as a group.
How much money do you need for 2 weeks in Japan?
Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and sorted some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Japan adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £450/$550 but this should be the bare minimum. Some people can spend less but the average will be looking at around £500-600/$600-700 to cover shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to. Maybe even a ticket to Universal Studios if that’s your thing.
What should I book first, the flights or the tour?
Great question! We always suggest getting the trip locked in first before booking flights. This way, you won’t be left disappointed if the trip goes full and you’ve already booked your flights. There are usually plenty of flight tickets available, but with our trips, the spaces are limited and the trips fill up pretty fast. We suggest booking your trip first, followed by your flight, and then purchasing your travel insurance to cover all eventualities. It’s a good idea to get these three out of the way as soon as possible.
How far in advance do you recommend booking my trip to Japan?
The average traveller typically books their trip 3-4 months in advance, which usually means there are plenty of options when it comes to dates. If you decide to book last minute, be prepared for limited availability. If you have your heart set on a specific date or trip, you should consider placing a deposit right away.
I’ve been looking at a few companies, what makes Feel Free Travel different?
If you're asking this question, you've probably not read what our incredible travellers are saying in the reviews. You would have noticed already that we are insanely passionate about sharing life-changing experiences with our groups. When we travel, it's more like a group of mates with that one friend who thankfully knows where they're going. Our group sizes are small and intimate, averaging 12-16 travellers. If you've not yet already, click here to join the 'Feel Free Family - Facebook Group'.
Is it possible to book a private tour of Japan with a group of friends?
We primarily specialise in bringing solo travellers together that arrive as complete strangers and soon become best friends/extended travel family. With that being said, we have been known to offer private tours subject to availability. If you send us an email to [email protected] one of the team will be in touch and see what we can do… no promises!
