Hospitable people, incredible food, rich heritage, crazy low prices, and a tonne of other people all doing the same thing… Vietnam is awesome and popular among solo travellers. It’s a great place to visit for anyone seeking some adventure in their lives. Let’s get into what makes it such a great place, and why you should already start looking at flights ✈️.

Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is the jewel in the crown that is Vietnam. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful place with hundreds, if not thousands of islands surrounded by clear and calm waters. Why not take an overnight cruise with the friends you’ve made so far on your travels! Whatever you do, make sure you jump in a kayak and explore some of the hidden caves. There are beaches, fishing villages and who knows…maybe you’ll find some new untouched and unexplored places! 👀

It’s Crazy Cheap

Vietnam is cheap even for South East Asia… that’s the best way I can put it. Everything is incredibly cheap here so it’s great for backpackers looking to travel on a budget. Granted some accommodations and experiences are comparative in pricing to other parts of South East Asia like Thailand but food and drink are much cheaper than its noisy neighbours.

Sharing a few cold ones with new friends has never been cheaper! Drinks beers on the street in Hanoi with the locals for as little as 25¢ 🍻

Mindblowing Experiences

The sights aren’t the only thing that risks blowing your mind, as there are even more incredible and unique experiences to be had too. I already mentioned Ha Long Bay as one example, but there is still so much more. Take a quad bike up and over the sand dunes in Mui Ne, climb to the incredible viewpoints in Ninh Binh, and ride in the back of an open-top Jeep along the Hai Van Pass (Some say one of the best road trips in the world). Then there are the bike tours around Hoi An, cooking classes, yoga retreats, war tunnels in Ho Chi Minh… and let’s not forget the bar crawls in Hanoi 💃 🕺

Relaxation

With serene beaches and cheap massages, you can find it very easy to let any troubles you’re facing melt away. Lay on the sand on the beach not far from Hoi An and take some time to reflect on the epic adventure so far. Then spend the afternoon getting rubbed down by someone with hands of pure magic, and you’ll feel more tranquil than any other time in your life.

If you're looking for a mix of everything from beaches, party nights and chilled vibes... Hoi An is the place for you!

Friends Are Guaranteed

When you combine the cost, incredible experiences, amazing food and warm welcoming people what do you get? A hell of a lot of travellers and explorers that are all looking for an incredible time. It’s no secret that Vietnam is a real hotspot for backpackers, and it’s our backpacking group tours in Vietnam are extremely popular. The most common route is from North to South starting in Hanoi and finishing in Ho Chi Min city, you’ll be sure to see familiar faces throughout your journey!

Local Families & Homestays

It’s a country that is full of incredible landscapes and heartwarming locals. You can choose to relax in your homestay or jump on a bike and cycle through the rice fields. Ninh Binh is home to some of Vietnam’s most unique landscapes (it was actually where the King Kong Movie, ‘Skull Island’ was filmed). Make your way into the local town of Tamcoc and jump on a paddle boat and enjoy the valley surrounded by huge limestone karsts… don’t worry… you won’t need to do much paddling yourself 🤣

Pro Tip: Be sure to visit the lying dragon viewpoint for sunset. The steps to the top will get your bloody pumping but rest assured you'll be greeted by mind blowing views 😍

Food

The food in Vietnam is up there as some of the best you can find. Their dishes are all amazing, and the street food is incredible. The main dishes tend to be Phõ (Noodle Soup), Bánh mì (French-inspired baguettes) and Spring Rolls (Fresh and fried… both incredible in their own way!)… but don’t stop there. It’s all tremendous, delicious, fresh and super cheap 🍲.

Book onto a cooking class! It's the best way to ensure you never go months at a time without tasting all this incredible food.

Take A Few History Lessons

With such a rich heritage and culture it’s a waste not to take it all in during your visit. See how the Vietnamese fended off foreign invaders during the Vietnam war when you visit the Cu Chi tunnels in Ho Chi Minh. It’s unbelievable when you see the living conditions they endured, the traps they came up with and the tight spaces they crammed themselves into. You can also learn all about their colonisation by the French (a reason for them having such incredible bread everywhere) and visit places dating back as far as 2000 years!

Party Time

Cheap is the word of the day and still counts for incredible nights out. Bar hopping in Hanoi is definitely the way to do it, start at a local restaurant and head to the famous ‘Beer Street’… enough said 😬. With Vietnam being such a hotel destination among backpackers you’ll be surrounded by not only locals but fellow travellers all looking for a night to remember!
