We know that booking connecting flights can feel daunting, and a little guidance can go a long way. Since flight schedules can vary from week to week, weâve put together a cheat sheet to make the process as hassle-free as possible.
These 6 tips below will give you peace of mind when booking those connecting flights đđź
#1 â Search for a âdirectâ flightâŚ
Weâve recently updated this blog to reflect that the direct flight option from Chiang Mai (CNX) to Hanoi (HAN) is now available seasonally. You can fly direct from November through April. However, from May through October, youâll need to transit through Bangkok (if youâre traveling during this period, skip to #2).
IMPORTANT: Youâll see in the screenshot below that the word âDirectâ is very clear. If the flight isnât âDirectâ follow from step #2 below!
#2 â Earlier is BetterâŚ
We recommend booking your flight as early as possible on Day 15. The sooner you depart, the sooner youâll arrive in Vietnam, giving you extra time to shower and freshen upâa little luxury youâll appreciate!
#3 â Book Each Leg SeparatelyâŚ
Only follow this tip if a direct flight isnât availableâsee Tip #1.
If youâre travelling from Thailand to Vietnam and need to transfer via Bangkok, it might seem easiest to search for a flight from Chiang Mai to Hanoi in one go. However, we recommend booking each leg separately. First, book a flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, then another from Bangkok to Hanoi. This approach gives you time to relax at the airport and grab some lunch between connections, plus it helps you avoid arriving too late in the evening.
#4 â Double-Check the AirportâŚ
When booking separate flight legs, itâs crucial to ensure your connection is at the same airport. Bangkok has two airports: Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Booking flights through the same airport will make your journey much easier, as these airports are about an hour apart.
#5 â Be generous with timingsâŚ
When booking your second flight, itâs wise to allow plenty of time between connections. If you can arrive in Bangkok by 10 or 11 a.m., thatâs idealâyou can then catch your next flight around 2 or 3 p.m., aiming to arrive by 5 p.m. Make sure to factor in 3-4 hours between flights to allow for collecting baggage and checking back in.
#6 â Have all your documentation readyâŚ
Being prepared before heading to the airport can greatly reduce stress and give you more time to relax, shop, or grab a bite to eat. Make sure you have all your essential documents readyâpassport, flight details, and visa (double-check this yourself).
To SummariseâŚ
Whenever possible, book a direct flight from Chiang Mai to Hanoi (see âTip #1â). If a direct option isnât available, aim to leave Chiang Mai as early as possible (around 8-9 a.m.). This will give you plenty of time to catch a flight from Bangkok around 2-3 p.m. or earlier. Make sure to allow 3-4 hours between flights for collecting your bags and checking back in.
